Steve Marcus died Sep 27th

Apparently this is hitting the musical community pretty hard. Went to see Steve Smith and the band last sunday. Hung with Gruber and Steve after the show. I've hung with Smith before and in comparison, this was a pretty somber evening. Could hear a pin drop. These guys were really upset from his passing. Must have been a great guy. Freddy said that he passed in his sleep. His wife went to wake him when someone called..... was a friend of Marcus' wanting to thank him for visiting after an open heart surgury. Can you imagine how his wife must have felt?? Gosh!! According to Freddy, he didn't have any problems!! I guess they're waiting for the autopsy to see what killed him.

I'm shocked at this news. I grew up watching Buddy play at Disneyland (usually a week long engagement in the summer!) and Steve was always in that chair looking as aloof as could be. He seemed to have an inside take on how to work with Buddy and remain friends, not an easy thing according to some accounts. He played his a$$ off. Gonna miss him.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I don't mean to sound flippant here AT ALL, but to go in this way is a blessing in disguise. As in, peacefully, w/out long-term debillitating illness.
I was shocked when i saw the thread here, but shortly after i came to the realization of this positive side...
My grandmother on my father's side passed this way. She was a good, strong woman. Likewise, i've had relatives & friends that did not pass in this way. It truly is a blessing in disguise once you look at it. "Our loss is eternity's gain"...

Well said. I've seen the latter more often than I care to think about.
How old was Steve, does anyone know?
I use to see him with Buddy every chance I got which was about a dozen times. He and Don Menza just killed it with their respective big bands. The circular breathing technique was pretty amazing. He really seemed like a real pro carrying on a passing tradition.
The music world will miss him.....
